International sustainable development in the oil and gas industry

In this course, students will conduct a detailed examination of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), their relevance, reporting, risks, opportunities, and management as they apply to the oil and gas industry (including planning, exploration, development, post-development) in Latin America.

Course plan

  1. Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, was approved by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. This important, ambitious and challenging global agenda for development has become the basis for actions on sustainability during the next ten years or so.
  2. Most countries in the world have developed and implemented several action plans framed in 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their associated goals around the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental.
  3. Successful actions and outcomes will critically depend on collaboration between all stakeholders, whether in government, business or civil society, working at the local, regional, national and international levels.
  4. We will examine the range and critical components of each of the SDGs that make up this global agenda, drawing on case studies, reports, multimedia materials, and experiences from international agencies, countries, cities, governments, and non-governmental organizations, companies and civil society. It will pay special attention to the SDGs that apply to Latin American countries and the interests, needs and expectations of the oil and gas sector.
