Corporate social responsibility and social return on investment in the oil industry

In this course, we will undertake a detailed examination of the principles and applications of corporate social responsibility applying them to the oil and gas industry (including planning, exploration, development, post-development) and within the context of sustainable development (economic, environmental and social) relevant to the countries of Latin America.

Course plan

  1. Benefits, risks and opportunities associated with managing environmental and social issues as they relate to the oil and gas industry.
  2. Business benefits/return on investment (ROI) of CSR, including building/maintaining stakeholder/shareholder trust, reputation, and social license to operate.
  3. CSR management: environmental/social performance accountability, communications and external relations, corporate governance
  4. Research, writing and management of company performance reports / CSR
  5. Drafting issues and stakeholder management plans.
  6. Review and/or create a management structure for CSR relevant to the student’s own organization/company.
  7. Evaluation of business case examples of CSR best and poor practices.

Training methodology

This 30-hour course will emphasize the practical applications of skills, techniques, and learnings that apply to CSR in the oil and gas industry. It will be delivered through a combination of presentations, multimedia activities, group discussions, simulations, exercises and directed reading/research.

Students are expected to prepare for course elements through directed research activities and to orally present/share their professional experiences and opinions around managing issues, risks and opportunities associated with Corporate Social Responsibility.

Professional profile

Experience or interest in working in the hydrocarbon/energy/mining or related industry or in government and non-government organizations related to these fields.

Acquired skills

  • We will strengthen the preparation and active participation of communities and local governments for the process of supporting the hydrocarbon industry in each of its stages (exploration, exploitation, transportation, closure and abandonment, and post-oil activity).

     

  • We will promote participatory spaces for the empowerment of communities and their governments in good practices on social development and environmental sustainability for regions with potential and hydrocarbon activity.
